With the right recipe fake chocolate sauce can be mesmerizing and beautiful just like the real thing. This recipe is tried and tested and a must-have in your fake bake recipe repertoire. Whether you’re making fake desserts, decorating photo props, or crafting unique art pieces, this recipe will give you a lifelike chocolate effect that’s fun to create! In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know to make your own realistic fake chocolate sauce with 3D effect using simple materials and easy-to-follow steps.
Materials Needed
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- White Glue: The base for your sauce matters. I have tried many bases like Emler’s glue, caulk and others, BUT many of them crack over time or just don’t make the right consistency. I recommend using Mod podge, the glossy kind for this particular sauce.
- Brown Acrylic Paint: For that rich, chocolatey color. Make sure it’s “burnt amber” for the most realistic shade
- Gloss Acrylic Medium (optional): To enhance the shiny, wet look after its dried.
- Cornstarch: To adjust the thickness and give it a 3D effect.
- Piping bags or squeeze bottle (for more liquid consistency)
- Mixing Tools: popsicle stick or wood spoon
- Mixing Bowl: Use a FLEXIBLE mixing bowl to turn your mess into effortless DIY chocolate sprinkles! I will share with you how in the tips and tricks section
- Scale: make sure to get the espresso scale if you also want to use it for weighing out foam clay projects. super helpful to keep proportions just right
Step-by-Step Instructions
Follow these steps to create your fake chocolate sauce:

1. Combine Ingredients
In a small bowl, mix equal parts mod podge and cornstarch until smooth.
- Tip: Start with less cornstarch and gradually add more to get a smooth texture.
2. Adjust the Consistency to your liking
- Tip: For a thinner drizzle add less cornstarch for thicker, 3D effect add more
3. Mix in the Paint
Add enough paint to get that deep rich chocolate brown but not too much to be wasteful
3. Add Shine (Optional)
Stir in a small amount of glossy acrylic medium for an enhanced shine in the finished product. This gives it a more realistic look. Experiment with the amount of gloss you add or leave it out completely.
4. Test Your Sauce
Drizzle the mixture over a piece of wax paper or a faux dessert to test the texture and flow. Adjust as needed.

Tips and Tricks
- Use piping bags to apply the sauce to your crafts. Cut a small hole at the tip. You can always make it bigger if you need a faster flow
- Store the cut bag in an uncut bag, to keep it from leaking, then store it in an airtight container. When you use it again remove the dried tip into a paper towel. It stores well for many months as long as it’s airtight!
- use up small leftover amounts to make shaped sprinkles. Simply spread them on wax paper in the shape you want and let dry. Watch this video where I made heart-shaped sprinkles.
- Cleaning tips: let your bowl dry, don’t wipe it clean or worse, wash it in the sink. You don’t want to plug your pipes. Here is why you want to use a flexible bowl! Once the fake chocolate sauce is dry you can push the sides of the bowl and crack the glue into little pieces. You can even use scissors to cut it even smaller. Wola, you got some chocolate sprinkles.
