Tips for working with Foam Clay
- If you have a particular soft and sticky clay I suggest to let it dry just a little bit and then mix it well or you can add a different type of clay called SOFT Clay. This will take the tackiness out and give the foam the needed support to hold its shape.
- The Secret to a super smooth and wrinkle-free appearance is your palm and the right pressure. When you roll the clay between your palms don’t be afraid to really squish and roll it around. This will ensure all the wrinkles disappear. Then you lessen the pressure and shape it into its final form.
- if you are trying to save money and color your own clay use Gel Food Colors. I find that acrylic colors will mess with the clay’s consistency and will dry it out which makes it impossible to work with.
If you are brand new to foam clay watch my beginner playlist on youtube that will go more into detail and teach you everything you need to know about foam clay.

Step 1: Condition and color your clay
Mix your clay to get it soft and smooth.

If you start with white clay add 1 drop of yellow gel color to your clay and mix. Add more if you want a darker shade.
Use gloves if you are worried about dying your hands, but if you mix in drop by drop and fold it in you will be able to keep your hands clean.
All body parts are a little bit square to imitate the butter log. Click on the hyper link of each part to watch a sequence of how to shape it.
For the head shape a rounded 2inch square, about 3/4 to 1 inch thick. Make some indentations on the sides to shape the cheeks.

For the body make a squarish cone by rolling it between your hands and then laying it down and shape it with your fingers.
Shape 2 balls for the feet then squish them into a squares.

place the eyes slightly below the midline to give the bunny a large forehead for the cute baby look.

For details like, inner ear and paw pads, add some more yellow to the clay and mix.
For the inner ear take a tiny piece of the darker yellow clay and roll it into a long teardrop. Then press it onto the ear.
For each foot make 3 small balls (toes) and 1 slightly larger ball (pad) to create the paw prints.

The nose is a tiny speck of coral clay, but you can add black or any other shade you want.
To attach the ears use toothpicks for more support. You also want to let the ears dry for a few minute before you attach them so you don’t squish them out of shape. If you find it difficult to attach them while they are still somewhat soft you can wait till the next day and add some glue to attach them. It will also help avoid any dropping of the ears due to gravity.

for the feet I just used some glue, but if you worry about them breaking off you can add the toothpick here too.
the arms are just small tear drops attached to the side of the body.

You want to do any shading while the foam clay is still wet. Watch this video to learn more about shading and why it is better to shade before the clay is dry. Use pink eyeshadow or soft pastels for the cheek and give the bunny an all over yellow glow to make his buttery skin pop.

For the cute butter spread on his head use something that has teeth like this pin wheel I am using or use what you have on hand.

To make the whipped cream all you do is shape a cone, then pinch and twist. If you need more practice how to get it right here is a full tutorial just on the whipped cream.

His tail a a bigger butter spread. Make it the same way as the small one just use a much bigger piece of clay. if you want exact amounts you can download the chart from my free printable group on Facebook.

I made the syrup using UV resin and i colored it with a speck of yellow gel food color and an even smaller speck of brown to give it that typical syrup color. I use the same colors that I use in the clay also in the resin with no problem. With a toothpick i drizzled some of the syrup over the whipped cream and i poured a generous amount onto the pancake. You will need to let it cure under the UV light until it is fully hardened.
